The Environment

De Oude Smidse is located in the in the municipality of “de Marne”, a less populated part of the Netherlands. The environment is characterized by “Het Hoogeland”, a widely extending area with many cultural offerings for tourist and a variety of sports and leisure opportunities.

The name Hoogeland (High Country) refers to its relatively high elevated level according to Dutch standards. This was caused by a washed-off landmass from the North Sea in the past centuries. The landscape around Westernieland is determined by a variety of so called “herenboerderijen”, splendid farmer estates of the last century, wide stretched agricultural fields and the typical Groninger cloud sky with ever changing cloud formations.
The most popular attractions and leisure activities in the area are the Seal Sanctuary in Pieterburen, mud walking and a trip to the island of Schiermonninkoog. The surroundings offer fantastic opportunities for cyclists, skaters, walkers, canoeists and other water sport enthusiasts. Take advantage of the many routes and trails throughout the country. You will be rewarded with views of beautiful small Dutch villages where you can find picturesque little houses as well as pompous mansions. The differences are large and also part of the historical development of the area. One of the highlight in each tour around the country are also the many historical churches - nowhere else in the Netherlands is the density of so many churches as high as it is here in the high country.

Regarding art the surrounding of Westernieland has a lot to offer. Every first Sunday of each month a federation of 18 local artists is organising the so called “route 99”. The galleries of the respective artists will open their doors for everyone from 12:00 – 17:00 on that day.
